La stampa cattolica irlandese ha previsto una diminuzione del 75% in 30 anni, cioè solo 450 preti sarebbero a servizio delle parrocchie entro il 2042. Secondo il TheJournal.ie, irishcatholic.ie, la cifra è stata raggiunta, se si tiene conto dei pensionamenti e del tasso di nuove ordinazioni. Attualmente ci sono 1.965 in ministero nelle 26 diocesi irlandesi. Solo 12 ragazzi sono entrati nel seminario di Maynooth lo scorso mese.
Stando alle statistiche il 50% di questi ne uscirà. Il presidente del Maynooth ha dichiarato che saranno necessari "grossi cambiamenti" nella chiesa a causa della mancanza di preti. Ad oggi ci sono 32 preti al di sotto dei 34 anni attivi in Irlanda, cioè una percentuale del 1,6% sul totale. La decrescita comporterà che centinaia di parrocchie resteranno senza un prete, secondo quanto afferma l'Irish Catholic's Deputy Editor, Michael Kelly. Esponenti della chiesa hanno definito queste cifre "molto preoccupanti".

The Irish Catholic newspaper has predicted a 75 percent decrease in Ireland over the next 30 years, which means only 450 priests will be serving in Irish parishes by 2042. According to TheJournal.ie, the figure was reached by examining imminent retirements and current ordination rates. Currently, there are 1,965 priests serving Ireland's 26 dioceses. Just 12 men entered the national seminary in Maynooth last month. On average, 50 percent of these men would be expected to drop out of the program. The president of Maynooth said "massive changes" will be necessary within the church due to the lack of priests. Right now there are 32 priests under the age of 34 working in Ireland, which is just 1.6 percent of the total number of active priests. The drop off in numbers will mean hundreds of parishes will be left without a priest according to The Irish Catholic's Deputy Editor Michael Kelly.
