And then there was one. Two more bishops indicated to Dublin Archbishop Diarmuid Martin that they were prepared to resign over the Murphy Report. Auxiliary Bishops of Dublin Eamonn Walsh and Raymond Field tenured their resignations on Christmas Eve. They had been informed by Archbishop Martin that they faced termination if they did not resign. Galway Bishop Martin Drennan is the only one of the five mentioned in the Murphy Report who has not resigned. Since the release of the Murphy Report pressure has been building for the five Bishops named specifically in the report over their conduct regarding reports of pedophile priests.

The bishops mentioned in the report either failed to take reports seriously, or failed to do more follow up with regards to the conduct of priests suspected of molesting children. Bishop of Limerick Donnal Murphy was highly dismissive when cases of child molestation were reported to him. He resigned in early December. Bishop of Kildare James Moriarty did report to the Archbishop of Dublin at the time he was an Auxiliary Bishop reports of one pedophile among the priesthood, but did little more than caution the priest involved.

In resigning, the hope expressed by the two Auxiliary Bishops is that they can bring some peace to those who were molested during their tenure in Dublin. The Vatican has been doing everything that they can in order to protect its power in Ireland and elsewhere with regards to this scandal. They have been reluctant to actively help bring these men to justice and claimed that they were being punished internally. This has included claims of diplomatic immunity. This has lead to the government of Ireland threatening to break off all diplomatic contact with the Vatican over their conduct over this report.

I vescovi ausiliari di Dublino Eamonn Walsh e Raymond Field hanno consegnato le loro dimissioni la vigilia di Natale. Erano stati informati dallo’Arcivescovo Martin che avrebbero rischiato la sospensione se non si fossero dimessi. Dalla pubblicazione del Rapporto Murphy sono state fatte pressioni si cinque vescovi specificatamente nominati nel rapporto riguardo la loro condotta nei casi di preti pedofili.

I vescovi menzionati nel rapporto o non hanno dato conto seriamente dei fatti, o non hanno dato seguito a sufficienza ai fatti relativi ai preti sospettati di molestie su minori. Il vescovo di Limerick, Donnal Murphy era reticente quando gli venivano riportati casi di molestie sessuali su minori. Ha dato le dimissioni i primi di dicembre. Il vescovo di Kildare, James Moriarty ha riferito all’Arcivescovo di Dublino al tempo in cui era ancora vescovo ausiliario di un pedofilo nel clero, ma non ha fatto molto di più che avvertire il prete coinvolto.

Dimettendosi, la speranza espressa dai due vescovi ausiliari è che possano riportare la pace a coloro che sono stati molestati durante il loro mandato a Dublino. Il Vaticano ha fatto tutto il possibile per salvaguardare il proprio potere in Irlanda e altrove, malgrado lo scandalo. E’ stato riluttante ad aiutare concretamente a sottoporre questi individui alla giustizia, sostenendo che dovessero essere giudicati internamente. Ivi compreso l’appello all’immunità diplomatica. Questo ha fatto sì che il governo Irlandese rischiasse di interrompere i rapporti diplomatici con il Vaticano a causa della reazione a questo rapporto.

Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin

DUBLIN, Ireland — In what turned into a night of high drama at Midnight Mass in Dublin on Christmas Eve, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin announced that two more bishops, Ray Field and Eamon Walsh, will resign their positions because of the spreading pedophile scandal in the Irish Catholic Church.

Martin's stunning announcement was made from the pulpit of the city's famous Pro-Cathedral. During the ceremony, a heckler shouted to the Archbishop that he should "pray to God for his sins."

Martin asked the congregation to pray for Field and Walsh and added, "pray for me, too."

Outside the cathedral, a demonstrator burned copies of the Murphy Report — which detailed the activities of pedophile priests and the cover-up of their crimes by senior Archdiocese officials — saying the report was also a cover-up,  and telling Mass-goers he and his brother had been abused by priests.

Both Field and Walsh were named in the Murphy Report. Their resignations mean that four bishops have now been removed who had worked in the Dublin Archdiocese in the 1980s and 1990s when the abuse occurred.

Bishops Donal Murray of Limerick and James Moriarty of Kildare have already stepped aside.

A fifth, Bishop Martin Drennan of Galway, is still insistent that he will not resign.

Dublino, Irlanda – In quella che è diventata una notte drammatica nella messa di mezzanotte a Dublino, la vigilia di Natale, l’arcivescovo Diarmuid Martin ha annunciato che altri due vescovi, Ray Field e Eamon Walsh, si dimetteranno dal loro ruolo a causa della diffusione dello scandalo della pedofilia nella chiesa cattolica irlandese.

Il sorprendente annuncio di Martin è stato lanciato dal pulpito della cattedrale cittadina. Durante la cerimonia, un dimostrante ha gridato all’arcivescovo che avrebbe dovuto “pregare Dio per i suoi peccati”.

Martin ha chiesto alla comunità di pregare per Field e per Walsh e ha aggiunto “pregate anche per me”.

Fuori della cattedrale, un dimostrante ha bruciato alcune copie del Rapporto Murphy – dove si parlava in dettaglio delle attività dei preti pedofili e della loro copertura ad opera degli ufficiali dell’Arcidiocesi – dicendo che anche il report era una copertura, e urlando ai fedeli che lui e suo fratello avevano subito abusi da parte dei preti.

Sia Field che Walsh erano nominati nel Rapporto Murphy. Le loro dimissioni significano che quattro vescovi sono stati ad oggi rimossi dalle loro attività nell’Arcidiocesi di Dublino tra il 1980 e il 1990, quando si sono verificati gli abusi.

I vescovi Donald Murray di Limerick e James Moriarty di Kildare si sono già fatti da parte.

Un quinto, Martin Drennan di Galway, insiste che non si dimetterà.
