NAIROBI, Kenia (CISA) Una setta che si oppone al celibato obbligatorio dei preti cattolici sta corteggiando in silenzio ex preti o preti sospesi dalla chiesa cattolica, chiedendo la loro adesione.

Catholic Information Service for Africa ha appreso che la setta sta avvicinando ex seminaristi con la promessa di una formazione all’estero e una successiva ordinazione al presbiterato uxorato nella chiesa cattolica riformata.

Il gruppo sta anche reclutando candidati donna, e, al momento, due donne sono state ammesse al seminario di preparazione negli Stati Uniti, ha detto John Karimi, il coordinatore della setta con sede a Nairobi.

Karimi è un ex prete cattolico della Diocesi Keniota di Murang, che ha rinunciato ai voti nel 2004. Egli descrive il celibato come una delle "leggi più arcaiche nella dottrina della chiesa cattolica" che dovrebbe essere eliminata.

"Il 97% dei preti vive una vita ipocrita", ci ha detto. "Si dovrebbe permettere loro di avere una vita sessuale".

L’ex-pastore della parrocchia di Ichagaki ha detto di essere stato felice di entrare nella chiesa riformata 15 anni fa, col suo passato di prete cattolico.

Lavora con Godfrey Shiundu, ex prete della diocesi di Kitale Diocese, la cui scomunica automatica dalla chiesa cattolica fu annunciata dal vescovo del Kenia in maggio quando ha sposato la sua fidanzata in una pubblica cerimonia.

A febbraio, il vescovo Maurice Crowley di Kitale scrisse a tutti i vescovi del Kenia mettendoli in guardia sulla nuova setta capitanata da Shiundu, che stava "ricevendo consensi dai cattolici di Kitale e delle diocesi limitrofe".

La setta stava anche inglobando "altri preti sospesi e celebrando liturgie nelle quali si ripudiano gli statuti della chiesa cattolica".

Parlando alla CISA il 16 novembre, P. Francis Moriasi, ex vicario generale della diocesi di Eldoret Diocese, ha confermato che il gruppo stava procedendo con il reclutamento.

"Questa è gente che conosciamo. Alcuni dei nostri preti si sono già associati. Ho dei nomi di almeno tre e-preti che hanno confermato di appartenere alla setta", ha detto P. Moriasi.

Una fonte attendibile ha riferito alla CISA come il gruppo tentasse di corteggiare gli ex-seminaristi con la promessa di un vita migliore. almeno tre ex-preti della diocesi di Nakuru già sono entrati nella chiesa riformata, ha confermato la fonte.

INella Diocesi di Homa Bay, membri della setta hanno costruito una chiesa, con il contributo di un ex-seminarista che ha voluto donare una parte dei terreni di famiglia per la costruzione dell’edificio. Ma la sua famiglia si è opposta alla donazione, ha riferito un prete alla CISA.

A Nairobi, John Baptist Kanga, un ex-seminarista che si è appena sposato, ha detto di essere stato avvicinato dal gruppo, ma poi scartato. Egli ritiene che il celibato debba essere opzionale.

NAIROBI, Kenya (CISA) – A sect opposed to mandatory priestly celibacy in the Catholic Church is quietly wooing former and suspended Catholic priests to join it.

Catholic Information Service for Africa are learned that the sect is targeting former Catholic seminarians with promises of further formation overseas and thereafter ordination to married priesthood in the Reformed Roman Catholic Church.

The group is also scouting for female candidates for the priesthood, and so far two women have been accepted for formation in the United States of America, John Karimi, the sect’s Nairobi-based coordinator, said.

Karimi is a former priest of the Kenya Catholic Church Murang’a Diocese who renounced his vows in 2004. He described celibacy as one of the "archaic laws in the doctrine of the Catholic Church" which should be scrapped.

"Ninety-seven percent of priests live a hypocritical life,†he said. “They should be allowed to maintain their sex life."

The former pastor of Ichagaki Parish said he was happy to join the Reformed Church after 15 years as a Catholic priest.

He works with Godfrey Shiundu, a former priest of Kitale Diocese whose automatic excommunication from the Catholic Church was announced by the bishops of Kenya in May after he married his longtime girlfriend in a much publicized ceremony.

In February, Bishop Maurice Crowley of Kitale wrote to all bishops of Kenya alerting them of a new sect headed by Shiundu, which was "attracting some attention from Catholics in Kitale and neighboring dioceses."

The sect was "attracting other suspended priests and holding ceremonies at which the statutes of the Catholic Church are being repudiated," he said.

Speaking to CISA on Nov. 16, Father Francis Moriasi, immediate former vicar general of Eldoret Diocese, confirmed that the group was carrying out quiet recruitment.

"These are people we know. Some of our priests have joined them already. I have names of three ex-priests who have confirmed being members of the sect," Father Moriasi said.

A reliable source told CISA of how the group attempted to woo his ex-seminarian brother with promises of a better life. At least three former priests of Nakuru Diocese joined the Reformed Church, the source said.

In Homa Bay Diocese, members of the sect tried to set up a church there recently, with the assistance of a former seminarian who apparently wanted to give them a piece his family land to build the church. But his family opposed the offer, a priest told CISA.

In Nairobi, John Baptist Kanga, an ex-seminarian who has since married, said he was approached by the group but declined. He was of the view that priestly celibacy should be optional.
