Chi siamo in realtà?

In ogni caso, mentre Fr.

Rimasi immobile senza riuscire a muovermi.

Scrissi a Fr.

The Apostles Wives’ Club
from www.corpus.org

We are a circle of wives who are married to Roman Catholic priests. Who Are We? Where are our voices? In Writing For Your Life, Deena Metzner wrote "Stories move in circles. They don’t go in straight lines. There are stories inside stories and stories between stories, and finding your way through them is as easy and as hard as finding your way home. And part of the finding is getting lost. And when you’re lost, you start to look around and to listen" There is so much power and healing when you tell and when you listen. What do you want to say?

What is Good About Spilling The Beans?

Sometimes it is easiest to try to forget your husband is a priest especially if he is of the thinking that Catholic priest should remain celibate. My husband still believes this and it has made it difficult for us to move on, and for us to find a religious home. Keeping this in mind, I want to tell you about an experience I had that has shifted my reality and given me new hope.

It was the 9th of June, 2008, when I received an email from Fr. J.T. Later, I realized it was the day of my own father’s birth. It just so happened that my Father had the same name too. However, the father I knew would turn like a top in his grave if he knew I was married to a Catholic priest, and now receiving emails form another priest who left the church and married. I often see wonderful connections between seemingly unrelated events, and many times they are really serendipitous. Was this one? Maybe now that my father is on the other side he may be seeing this very differently?

Anyway, while Fr. J.T. was searching on the Internet trying to locate my husband he came across my art blog. He wrote me hoping that he had found the right person. He said he went to seminary with my husband and was married now. He wondered how F. was doing. Later, we learned that Fr. J.T.. had one small child and another on the way, and was an active Anglican priest. I was thrilled by the email and thought that maybe this would be the person F. needed to hear from for all these years.

When I showed my husband the email form Fr. J.T., my husband made contact with him immediately. They talked at length, and later Fr. J.T. sent a picture of his beautiful daughter via email to F. In this picture, was a little girl who appeared so thrilled to have her picture taken, and she looked so shy yet she was smiling so big. My heart just went out to her. I couldn’t help myself, and I responded even though the email was not meant for me.

Fr. J. T. and I started to exchange emails and eventually we talked on the phone about how my husband felt about his priesthood. Fr. J. T. said something to me that I had never heard before. He told me I should honor my husband’s priesthood and request his priesthood from him. If I didn’t who would? It seemed a most unusual notion to me that I could do this. He also said something else that parted the fog in my heart. He said that even if the church welcomed all the married priests back to the church to minister as priests, he himself would not go back. He said he had all that he could ever hope for in life. He felt truly blessed. He had his relationship with God, his priesthood, and his family.

After this conversation, I had the most profound experience. I came across a picture of my husband dressed in a suit and tie, and all of the sudden I felt I was seeing him for the first time. Actually, it didn’t seem as though it was my husband either, but I was seeing something so noble, so lovely, strong, and pure. Tears just started streaming down my cheeks, but it wasn’t out of sadness. I just stood there for some time unable to move. I felt really released, cleansed and so blessed. I didn’t understand what was happening to me. Every time I thought about what I saw I wept. This went on for the next few days. I felt like I had been touched by One who really loves me. I think I saw my husband’s priesthood for the first time, or was it the love of Christ’s priesthood? I can only describe it as a God experience.

I wrote Fr. J. to thank him for the help he gave me and the new perspective, and because the "experience" I had was so moving, I told him about what had happened. Right after I sent the email, I started feeling like I had reveled too much. I felt naked and a little crazy. I began to think that the "experience" I had had was not real, and I was totally unhinged that I had told him about it. He may think I am just an over dramatic nut. However, when I thought of the "experience", I felt a wonderful sense of peace and profound love. Anyway, it was too late I had already spilled the beans.

He wrote me back saying," I want to say, Yes, if not you who will start acknowledging his priesthood? if you believe, honestly he is a priest and you are not in competition with God, you should, sorry to say the word should, acknowledge. I want to reassure you, you can not or will not be able to compete with God for F.’s love. He loves you dearly and the more he loves you, am fully convinced with my experience that his and your love for God will increase and turns out to be the best in the end. So, all to say one thing, please do love, appreciate, acknowledge, request the priesthood of F. life. That will be one of the best things you can do. Yes, there are the guilt trips church dogmas will send you to. Unless church dogma gets out of the way, it is hard for us to see God. That is what St. Francis did. He kept the church dogma away to see the Lord clearly. He did. " So, Please give a chance to the Holy Spirit and to the Lord to work in you and F. and you will see miracles. I believe in it and I wait for it."
As the days passed, and even still, I have had several affirmations come to me form unexpected and unrelated conversations and even a dream that dispelled any doubts about what I had experienced, and what Fr. J. T. had shared about honoring F.’s priesthood.

Now I believe that my discomfort maybe had some to do with the substance of what I had shared, but actually more to do with the fact that I shared. What I was feeling were the aches that come when I move out of my comfort zone.

I took the risk of talking with Fr. J.T. and through that and because of his generosity I have come to see F.’s priesthood in a new way. I also have had the awakening that our relationship with God is more important than whether or not we are Catholic, and more importantly I can await Him. I feel God had something to tell us and He used Fr. J.T. to give us His message. What happens to us now is still a mystery waiting to unfold.

Out of it all of this, I also gained the courage to risk again, and do something I have wanted to do for some time: to launch this blog The Apostles’ Wives Club. So, maybe spilling the beans is a good thing?

Examining The beginning

I spent the morning trying to find you, you elusive wives of priests. Where are you? Searching for you is a bit like searching for blond woman in Afghanistan. Are we all hidden behind a veil?

Today I wondered about the circumstance of our meeting with our husbands. How many met their husbands while they were still priests, and were they acting toward us in a ministerial capacity? I am thinking that the vast majority of meetings were in this setting. Am I right? It is not likely that many women met their husband through a friend, or on a blind date, at a social gathering, or at work, but maybe we did. How many of us are Catholic or were Catholic at the time we met? Where is our faith now? How many of us have divorced? Were We in an eual relationship before we married? Are we now?

This can be a wildly touchy subject for wives as well as the priest husband because how we met and developed a relationship has many implications of problems that we may not want to look at. Maybe we thought marriage would change this, but I think it is needs to be explored.

I am not passing judgement on the priests or the wives of priests. I am one among you. I am just hoping we can all gian some insight, while we look into relationships that we have created and the church condemns. I just invite exploration.
