Saluti dall’Africa. E’ bello essere si nuovo a casa. Abbiamo trascorso 40 giorni in serenità, senza grossi problemi, fin quando non siamo arrivati in Corea. Ci stiamo di nuovo adeguando al clima coreano. Grazie delle vostre preghiere e degli auguri per il mio 50° anniversario di ordinazione, nonché del mio matrimonio. Tutto è andato bene. Grazie a Dio e a tutti voi.
Miei cari confratelli preti sposati, noi comprendiamo i vostri problemi. C’è un proverbio africano che dice: "Wamva M’mimba ndiye atsekula citseko - Uno che ha mal di pancia corre verso la porta per liberarsi!". In molte case africane i bagni non hanno la porta. Devono andare all’aperto per i propri bisogni. Molti di voi, alcuni sono già deceduti, si aspettavano che la vostra madre chiesa prendesse a cuore la vostra situazione. Ma ancora oggi vi trovate nella medesima situazione.
In questo periodo la chiesa cattolica romana sta indicendo una campagna per convincere i fedeli ingenui che noi siamo una setta. Alcuni di questi cristiani che hanno creduto in ciò che diciamo riguardo il celibato obbligatorio, sono stati allontanati dalle chiese, tacciati di essere seguaci della setta di Milingo. Non sappiamo fino a che punto si arriverà.
Il problema è che in moolti paesi i preti sposati hanno ancora paura di celebrare la messa in pubblico. Naturalmente, è lo stesso prete che continua a nascondersi. In Kenya, un prete sposato e un seminarista stanno creando ampi spazi all’aperto per grandi celebrazioni. E la gente sembra accettare la cosa. Il prete sposato ha difficoltà a spostarsi in bicicletta e alcuni fedeli gli hanno concesso dello spazio per costruire una chiesa. Egli ha condiviso questa sua esperienza con i preti sposati del Kenya, che hanno preso sul serio la cosa tanto da istituire il capitolo dei preti sposati del Kenya, dal titolo: Il Capitolo della Prelatura Married Priests Now in Kenya - Prelatura Cattolica dei SS. Pietro e Paolo. E’ triste vedere i preti sposati dello Zambia, che sono come topi che muoiono di fame nascosti in una tana, col terrore delle conseguenze di una eccessiva esposizione. Se i topi fossero usciti allo scoperto, il peso sarebbe stato percepito in modo relativo. Ma preferiscono morire di fame per niente. I preti sposati dello Zambia hanno troppa paura del Vaticano, della chiesa cattolica romana. Mi hanno parlato, li ho invitati al meeting dei pastori, ma non sono mai usciti fuori. Comunque, anche senza di loro, dopo il meeting dei Pastori, abbiamo costituito un fronte cristiano unificato. Abbiamo deciso di nominare la nostra unione: Prelatura Cattolica Apostolica dello Zambia. Ci sembrava che ’una diocesi’ fosse troppo vicina alla tradizione della struttura cattolica romana. Abbiamo metodisti, presbiteriani, teosofisti, pentecostali ed evangelici. Speriamo di annettere presto alcuni anglicani, luterani e aventisti del settimo giorno. Erano presenti all’incontro alcuni osservatori.
Riguardo a come procedere insieme, ne abbiamo discusso il 17 settembre insieme ad un comitato eletto, dopo aver lasciato lo Zambia. Stiamo aspettando le minute dell’incontro del 17 settembre. Che grande responsabilità abbiamo! Abbiamo intrapreso senza dubbi la via dell’unità, come dice la lettera agli Efesini 4:1-6. Scrivo questa email sotto forma di ’azione e reazione’ affinché anche loro si muovano. Faremo un follow-up prima della fine dell’anno, inviando un arcivescovo della Prelatura in Zambia ad incontrare i Pastori. Il tema su cui indubbiamente si può intraprendere una azione è: "Vivificare la Comunità Cristiana".
Ritorno in Africa a Dicembre: Camerun
Dopo aver lasciato il Camerun, le voci dei pastori camerunensi si sono fatte sentire. Ma non è stata colpa nostra. I vescovi ci hanno incontrati in privato. Ci dispiace che sia andata così. Eravamo sotto il controllo dei vescovi Gallicani, Bizantini e Stevenisti. L’anziano vescovo cattolico di Brazaville questa volta non è venuto, sebbene fosse presente al Catholic International Symposium. Questo è il comitato di vescovi che è stato istitutito lo scorso anno. Non hanno annesso tra le fila nuovi vescovi Metodisti, Presbiteriani, ecc. Ci sono ben 168 denominazioni cristiane in Camerun. Sia la chiesa cattolica romana che quella anglicana, reclamano il monopolio della religione. Quindi in Camerun, la religione ufficiale è cattolica romana. Comunque, non esistono eccezioni al celibato obbligatorio che abbia causato decessi nei preti o nelle religiose di cui non si sia tenuto conto.
Dato l’alto numero di vescovi in Camerun che vogliono appartenere alla nostra unione, sono stato nominato Patriarca. Ho chiesto loro quali fossero i miei compiti. Ci stanno lavorando. Esiste un solo altro patriarcato in Africa, iin Egitto, Cairo. Bisognerà studiarla bene, dato che nella chiesa cattolica romana il patriarcato è stato abolito. La sede di Venezia l’aveva spuntata, ma ora non più. Sono ignorante sulla natura dei Patriarcato e su ciò che comporta. Comunque, se ne parlerà in dicembre.
50° Anniversario del mio Presbiterato
E’ stato celebrato in Kenya. Eravamo solo 10 all’inizio della messa. Ma alla fine eravamo circa 40. E’ stato bello perché ognuno di loro ha formulato una sua preghiera per me. Non abbiamo indugiato sul rituale vero e proprio. I fondi erano abbastanza limitati, ma abbiamo fatto il possibile con quello che avevamo.
Matrimonio
Ho coinvolto i miei confratelli di Ngoni. Hanno contribuito positivamente. Mi hanno consigliato e sostenuto e hanno partecipato al rinfresco e alle danze. La gente era contenta e si è divertita. Tornando a Lusaka, la capitale, abbiamo richiesto la registrazione del certificato di matrimonio e abbiamo dovuto pagare un sacco di soldi, come se un uomo, anche se proviene dallo Zambia, non potesse sposare una straniera. "E’ la legge", e non si scappa.
Azione e Reazione
E’ inutile starsene a piangere, guardando un uomo ferito che si è tagliato accidentalmente. Lui continua a perdere sangue e muore per emorragia. Torniamo alla storia di quell’uomo che si è lasciato morire senza cercare sluzioni e vie d’uscita per fermare il sangue che usciva dalla ferita. Le centinaia di preti sposati che sono rimasti nella stasi, che si sono sepolti senza cercare una strada per vivere: "Non c’è più nulla da fare per me?" Rispondiamo: "No. La tua salvezza è con noi. Torna alla vita. Noi ti sveliamo quello che dovresti già sapere: che sei prete per sempre e nessuna autorità può toglierti tutto questo. Il popolo di Dio aspetta che tu ti offra come prete sposato e ti abbraccerà".
Miei cari preti sposati, indossate i panni che furono di S. Gertrude, il suo modo di reagire quando sentiva il peso delle sue mancanze. Lei diceva: "La mia anima si è sciolta con te e io voglio raggiungerti. Ma tra me e te vedo una distanza che non può essere colmata. La sua sommità è coperta di spine e mi sembra di non avere possibilità di tornare a te. Mi sono fermata per purificarmi dai peccati che erano poi il senso di quella distanza. Nella mia piccolezza, tu hai usato misericordia e mi hai posto al tuo fianco senza difficoltà. La mano che mi hai teso era il compimento della tua promessa e ho riconosciuto i raggi luminosi che hanno cancellato il ricordo dei torti subiti" (Col. 2: 14). (S. Gertrude 1256-1302). Siete stati feriti, non restate feriti. Ricordate: "Mi hai posto con misericordia accanto a te, senza difficoltà", dice S. Gertrude.

Greetings from Africa. It is nice to be back home. We spent 40 nice days, without falling sick, till when we arrived here in Korea. We are now recuperating adjusting ourselves once more to the Korean climate. Thank you for your prayers, and for the best wishes for my 50th priestly anniversary ordination, and the traditional marriage. All went well. Thank God and you all.
My fellow married priests, we are the ones who understand our problem. There is an African proverb, which says: “Wamva M’mimba ndiye atsekula citseko.†“One who is suffering from stomach-ache is the one who runs to the door to open it for releasing himself.†In many African homes, they don’t have in-door toilets. They have to go out to release themselves. Many of you have expected, some have now died, that one day your mother Church should condescend to your situation. Up till now you are in the same position.
These days the Roman Catholic Church is mounting a campaign to instill in the minds of innocent people that we are a sect. Some of these Christians who have believed in what we are saying about mandatory celibacy are being chased out of the Churches as followers of a Milingo sect. We don’t know how far this is going up to.
It is due to the fact that the married priests in some countries are still afraid to say Mass for small groups. Of course, it is the Priest himself who still keeps hiding himself. In Kenya, one married Priest and a seminarian are opening up out-stations for Masses. The people have accepted them. The married Priest is reaching difficult out-situations on a bicycle. Some of his faithful have even given him land on which to build a Church. He shared his experiences with the Kenyan married priests, who took it seriously and ended up by establishing the Kenyan Chapter of married priests, with the Title: The Kenyan Chapter of Married Priests Now: Catholic Prelature of SS. Peter and Paul.
It is sad to see Zambian married priests, who are like rats dying of hunger in a hole, being afraid of the cob-web on the mouth of a hole for going out. If the rats forced their way out, they would not have felt the weight a cob-web. But they died of hunger for nothing. The Zambian married priests are so afraid of the Vatican, the Roman Catholic Church. They spoke with me. I invited them to the Pastors’ meeting, they never turned up. However, without them, after the Pastors’ meeting, we formed a Christian unified front. We ended up by calling our union and unity: “The Zambian Catholic Apostolic Prelature.†We felt that “a diocese†would sound too close to the Roman Catholic Structure. We have Methodists, Presbyterians, Theosophists, Pentecostals and Evangelicals. We look forward to have soon with us the Anglicans, the Lutherans and the Seventh day Adventists. We had with us the Watch-Towers.
As to how we shall work together was discussed on 17th September by an elected committee, just as we left Zambia. We look forward to receive the minutes of 17th September, 2008. What a responsibility we have. We have concretely paved the way to unity, using Ephesians 4:1-6. I am writing this e-mail on “Action and Reaction†in order to put them in motion. A follow up can be done before the end of the year, by one of the four Archbishops of the Prelature, to go to Zambia and meet the united Pastors. The main talk which put them in motion was “Vivifying the Christian Community.â€
Back to Africa in December: Cameroon
After we left Cameroon were the voices of the Cameroonese Pastors heard. It was not our fault. The Bishops kept us for themselves. We regret that it so happened. We were under the control of the Gallican, Byzantine, Stevenists Bishops. The Old Catholic Bishop of Brazaville did not come this time, though he was present at the Catholic International Symposium. This was the committee of Bishops which was formed a year ago. They did not add to their number other Bishops, such as Methodists, Presbyterians, etc. There are 168 Christian denominations in Cameroon. Though the Roman Catholic Church claims a monopoly of religion as the fully registered Church so too the Anglicans. So in Cameroon, the official religion is Roman Catholic.
However, there is no exception to the imposed celibacy that has caused deaths of priests and nuns (Religious sisters) for which nobody has rendered account.
Due to the big number of Bishops in Cameroon who want to belong to us, they have agreed to officially enthrone me as Patriarch. I have asked them to tell me what will be my duties towards them? They are working on the paper. There is only one such Patriarch in Africa. That is in Egypt, Cairo. So a lot more should be studied, as the Patriarchate in the Roman Catholic Church was abolished. The See of Venezia had stuck to it, but now no more. I am ignorant of the nature of Patriarchate and what it involves. However, they have planned it for December.
50th Anniversary of my Priesthood
It was celebrated in Kenya. We were only ten at the beginning of the Mass. We ended up approximately 40 people altogether. It was good because everyone had a space to say a prayer for me. We did not spend much on the celebration. Our funds were limited, but we made it with the little money we had.
Traditional Marriage:
Here my Ngoni Chiefs were involved. They contributed a lot. They gave us counseling, and then followed the banquet and the dances. People were happy and enjoyed themselves. Coming back to Lusaka, the capital, we asked for the official registration of a Zambian marriage certificate, and had to pay a lot of money, as if we, Zambian men should not marry foreigners. “It is the law,†no complaint. It is useless to sit crying, looking at one’s oozing leg, when one accidentally cuts oneself. One loses more blood, and may die of hemorrhage. The story will finally return to the man who saw himself dying without finding ways and means to stop the oozing blood from the hurt. The hundreds and hundreds of married priests have left themselves in the awkward situation, in which they put themselves without finding ways themselves: “Is it all finished with me? “We answer: “No. Here is your salvation. Come back to your senses. What we are revealing to you: that you are a Priest forever,†has been there always. No authority can take it away from you. The people of God are waiting for you to present yourself as a married priest, they will embrace you.
My dear married priests, put yourselves in the shoes of St. Gertrude the Great, and hear how she reacts, as she feels the weight of her sinfulness. This is how she shares her feelings: “My soul melted within me, and I wanted to approach you. But I saw between you and me a hedge that seemed to have no end. The top of it appeared to be covered with thorns, so that I could find no way to return to you. I paused to weep over my sins that the hedge doubtlessly represented. In my weakness you mercifully took me by the hand and instantly placed me beside you without any difficulty. Then in that hand which you had extended to me as a pledge of your promises, I recognized your radiant wounds that wiped out the record of the debt that was against us (See Col. 2: 14).†(St. Gertrude the Great: 1256-1302). You have been wounded, don’t remain wounded. Remember: “You mercifully placed me beside you without difficulty.†says St. Gertrude.
