Di seguito il testo dell'intervento di GARY BERGERON alla manifestazione dei preti pedofili a Roma del 31/10/2010. Il testo è in inglese ed italiano. Ha 48 anni e vive a Boston.

SPEECH GARY BERGERON

Whether you have traveled from another city, another country, or another continent, I realize that the journey each of us has taken be her has been long and difficult. I read once that "A real friend is one who walks in, when the rest of the world walks out". I would like to thank ali of my friends who walked in with me, and who are standing with me heretoday.

Sia che voi siate arrivati da un'altra citta', un'altro paese o un'altro continente, mi rendo conto che il viaggio intrapreso da ognuno di noi per arrivare qui e' stato lungo e difficile. Ho letto da qualche parte che " Un vero amico e' quello che ti sta vicino mentre il resto del mondo si allontana". Voglio ringraziare tutti i miei amici che mi sono stati vicini e che sono qui con me oggi.

As a child who was brought up in a home of feith, I was taught that my hope was to one day, touch the face of God. As a victim who lived in fear, I learned that the only hope I had was the hope to forget. As a child I was taught to learn as though I would live for ever, and yet as a victim, I often find myself living each day as though I were to die tomorrow.

Da bambino sono cresciuto in una famiglia religiosa, mi e' stato insegnato che la mia speranza era di toccare un giorno il volto di Dio. Come vittima che vive nella paura, ho imparato che la mia unica speranza era quella di dimenticare. Da bambino mi hanno insegnato ad imparare come se dovessi vivere per sempre e, tuttavia, come vittima, mi ritrovo spesso a vivere ogni giorno come se dovessi morire domani.

As a survivor standing here today, I no longer live ih fear nor do I look to touch the face of God. As I look out and see ali of you standing here with me, steps away from where we cannot gather, I see fear subsiding, I see hope being restored, and as I look out and see ali of us standing here together, feeling the very tears from heaven crying down upon us, we are sharing the pain of abused children from around the world, and I now understand what it is to know God.

Come sopravvissuto che e' qui oggi, non vivo più' nella paura ne' spero di toccare il volto di Dio. Quando mi guardo intorno e vedo tutti voi qui con me, a un passo da dove non possiamo radunarci, vedo la paura diminuire, vedo rinforzarsi la speranza ; e mentre mi guardo intorno e vedo tutti noi qui insieme, sento le lacrime del cielo piangere su di noi che insieme sopportiamo il dolore dei bambini abusati di tutto il mondo e mi rendo conto di cosa vuol dire conoscere Dio.

As victims, we ali learned the meaning of solitude, fear, anger and vengeance. As survivors standing here today, we are learning the meanings of friendship, hope, justice & determination.

Come vittime, abbiamo imparato tutti il significato della solitudine, della paura, della rabbia e della vendetta.

Come sopravvissuti qui e oggi, stiamo imparando il significato dell'amicizia, della speranza, della determinazione e della giustizia.

What we once had as children, we can never get back. That is not why we stand here today. We stand here today to serve as reminders to the world that what was once taken from us must never be taken from another child again. We stand here today as witnesses of an institution - of a society - that lost its way. We stand here today asking the world to finally stand with us. We stand here today asking the world to jota us in saying...Enough!

Non riavremo mai quello che eravamo da bambini. Ma non e' per questo che siamo qui oggi. Siamo qui per ricordare al mondo intero che quello che ci e' stato preso non deve essere mai più' preso ad un altro bambino. Siamo qui oggi come testimoni di una istituzione - di una società' - che ha perso la sua strada. Siamo qui oggi per chiedere a tutto il mondo di mettersi finalmente dalla nostra parte.Siamo qui oggi per chiedere al mondo intero di unirsi a noi per dire "Basta!"

If the success of our race, as human beings - is based on the protection of our children, then the continued acceptance of the status quo of the systemic sexual abuse of children is nothing less than crimes against humanity, and it should be labeled as such.

Se il successo della nostra razza, gli esseri umani, dipende dalla protezione dei nostri bambini, la ripetuta tolleranza dello status quo degli abusi sessuali sui bambini non e' altro che un crimine contro l'umanità' e come tale deve essere riconosciuto.

The one naturai resource that is equally shared in every country of the world is the one naturai resource that has been equally ignored by ali. It is the naturai innocence of children.

L'unica risorsa naturale dell'umanità' divisa equamente in ogni singolo paese del mondo e' l'unica risorsa naturale che e' stata ugualmente ignorata da tutti. E' l'innocenza dei bambini.

If our moral compass is defined by the safekeeping of our children, then the world must take notice that the sexual abuse of children has put us on a course that we cannot continue to follow.

Se la difesa dei nostri bambini e' la nostra bussola morale, allora il mondo deve rendersi conto che l'abuso sessuale sui bambini ci ha messi su una rotta che non possiamo più' continuare a seguire.

These crimes against humanity continue to be our failures ofyesterday; they continue to be our failures of today and they will continue to jeopardize our future. We cali today on the United Nations to define and include the "Systemic sexual abuse of children" under Artide 7 of its charter definitions of "Crimes Against Humanity".

Questo crimine contro l'umanità' continua ad essere fa nostra sconfitta di ieri, continua ad essere il fallimento di oggi e continuerà' a mettere a repentaglio il nostro futuro. Oggi chiediamo alle Nazioni Unite di includere "l'abuso sessuale sistemico sui bambini" nell'articolo 7 delle descrizioni del proprio atto costitutivo di "Crimini contro l'Umanità'"

There is no person, in any position, in any institution, in any part of the world, whose status or position should be above the protection our children...or above the law. Nor is there any person, in any institution, in any part of the world whose given status or position should be above the priority of healing of those abused as children.

Non esiste persona, in qualsiasi posizione, in qualsiasi istituzione in qualsiasi parte del mondo, la bui importanza debba prevalere sulla difesa dei bambini........... o sulla legge. E non esiste persona , di qualsiasi istituzione in qualsiasi parte del mondo, che debba avere la priorità' sull'aiuto necessario alle vittime ed ai sopravvissuti abusati da bambini.

If words without action are only wishes, then I ask you, what is prayer without action? We can no longer put our future, and the future of our children in the hands of those only interested in only words or prayers. We must mark this day as a day of action. A day that the world has decided to reform the way it addresses both the abuser, and the abused.

Se le parole senza azioni sono solo fantasie, allora cosa sono le preghiere senza azioni? Non possiamo più' mettere il nostro futuro ed il futuro dei nostri bambini nelle mani di chi e' interessato solo nelle parole e nelle preghiere. Dobbiamo marcare questo giorno come un giorno di azione. Il giorno in cui il mondo ha deciso di riformare il comportamento sia verso chi abusa sia verso chi viene abusato

We stand here today for those that cannot be with us. For the young, the innocent, those who were once abused, and those, if the course we are on is not changed, will be abused. We stand here today, and will continue to stand, as a reminder that our course must be redirected. We stand here today, as the witnesses of the failures of yesterday. We stand here today, not in the fear or the shame we felt as children. We stand here today as a reminder of the work that needs to be done and a reminder of the children who need to be protected.

Siamo qui oggi per coloro che non possono essere qui con noi. Per i giovani, gli innocenti, per coloro che sono stati abusati, e per coloro che saranno abusati se non cambiamo rotta. Siamo qui oggi, e continueremo ad esserci, per segnalare che la nostra rotta deve essere cambiata. Siamo qui oggi a testimonianza degli errori di ieri. Non siamo qui oggi nella paura della vergogna che abbiamo provato da bambini. Siamo qui oggi per ricordare il lavoro che deve essere fatto e i bambini che devono essere protetti.

As a child, I was abused by a man who's only power over me, was his position in society and the status he was given by the world. I have grown to realize that he was in fact only a man. The people who protected him, were only men. The people who continue to be in denial today, and they continue to shield both the abuser and the truth. They must not be protected by their status any longer.

Da bambino sono stato abusato da un'uomo il cui solo potere su di me era la sua posizione nella società' e lo status conferitogli dal mondo. Crescendo mi sono reso conto che era in realta' solo un uomo. Le persone che lo hanno protetto erano solo uomini. Le persone che ancora oggi continuano ad essere in diniego, continuano nascondere sia i colpevoli che la verità'. Non possono più' essere protetti dal loro status.

I no longer look at people based on the status they are given by anyone. They hold no power over anyone other than the power people give them. I look at ali people based upon their actions. As an aduli, I have grown to understand this. As I stand here today, I wait for the world to grow and understand it as well.

Non guardo più' la gente in base allo status attribuitogli da altri. Non hanno altro potere su nessun altro oltre al quello che la gente gli conferisce. Da adulto sono arrivato a capirlo. E qui, oggi, aspetto che anche il mondo cresca e lo capisca.

On this day, I say to every person that has ever sexually abused a child, to every person who has protected or continues to protect someone that has sexually abused a child, I am not that child anymore, and I do not fear you, I am not afraid am not afraid of you.

Oggi io dico ad ogni persona che e' stata sessualmente abusata nell'infanzia, ad ogni persona che abbia protetto o che continui a proteggere qualcuno che ha sessualmente abusato un bambino, io non sono più' un bambino e non ti temo più', non ho paura e non ho paura di te.

A decade ago, we first began to share our stories like quiet whispers in the night. From the day we began to whisper, until the moment that we stand here today, the response we received has remained Constant. It was spoken in many different languages and in many different countries.

Una decina d'anni fa abbiamo iniziato a raccontare le nostre storie come lievi sussurri nella notte. Dal giorno in cui abbiamo iniziato a sussurrare fino ad oggi, le risposte che abbiamo ricevuto sono state costanti. Sono state dette in molte lingue e in molti paesi.

It was spoken by our friends & our family. It was spoken by our presidents and our prime ministers. It was spoken by the politicians and pastore, and yes, it was spoken by our by the pope. When we began to share our stories their response was always"I didn't know, You never told me, Inever knew"

Sono state pronunciate dai nostri amici e dalle nostre famiglie. Sono state affermate da politici e dal papa. Sono state ribadite dai primi ministri e dai presidenti. Quando abbiamo iniziato a raccontare la nostra storia, la risposta e' stata: "Non lo sapevo. Non l'ho mai saputo".

Today, our stories which began as quiet whispers are whispers no more. Today, I say to every priest, to every politician, to every leader in every country in the world, to those who hear my voice tonight and to those who may read my words tomorrow, the excuse of "/ did not know, You never told me or I never knew" can no longer be used as a defense.

Oggi che siamo qui, le storie che sono cominciate come lievi sussurri non sono più' sussurri. Oggi che siamo qui, io chiedo ad ogni prete, ad ogni politico, ad ogni leader in ogni paese del mondo, a coloro che ascoltano la mia voce stasera o che leggeranno le mie parole domani, la scusa"non lo sapevo, non me l'hai mai detto o non l'ho mai saputo" non può' più' essere usata come una difesa.

Standing here today, we ask you, now that you do know: "What are you willing to do about it? "What are you willing to do to see that there is not another child ever sexually abused again?" "What are you willing to do today, in order to change the future of your children, of our children, of ali children?"

Vi chiedo oggi, ora che sapete: " Cosa siete disposti a fare al riguardo?" "Cosa siete
disposti a fare perche' non ci sia più' un altro bambino sessualmente abusato?" "Cosa
siete disposti a fare per cambiare il futuro dei vostri bambini, dei nostri bambini, di tutti i
bambini?"ì

I stand here today, a childhood victim of clergy sexual abuse... .the friend of a sexual abuse victim... .the brother of a sexual abuse victim, and I stand here today the son of a sexual abuse victim. I am standing here today, so that I will never have to say: "I am the father of a sexual abuse victim." To every survivor here today, and to those who are not with us: I will continue that journey wherever it leads!

Sono qui oggi, vittima di abusi sessuali nell'infanzia.. amico di una vittima di abusi sessuali.... ... fratello di una vittima di abusi sessuali, e sono qui oggi figlio di una vittima di abusi sessuali. Sono qui oggi cosi' che non debba mai dire: "Sono il padre di una vittima di abusi sessuali." Ad ogni sopravvissuto oggi qui, e a tutti i sopravvissuti che non sono qui con noi: continuerò' questo viaggio ovunque conduca!

For some of us, today may be the start of a journey. To others, this day is but a step in a journey started years ago, but let the world take notice: That this day, October 3 l^st, marks the end of this journey, for no one.

Per molti di noi qui, oggi e' l'inizio del cammino. Per altri e' un passo sul cammino iniziato anni fa, ma che il mondo prenda nota: questo giorno, 31 Ottobre, marca il proseguimento di questo cammino; per tutti noi.
