Predichiamo Cristo Crocifisso (II lettura: 1 Cor 1,22-25)

The world we live in

For some Sunday, we will track back to a statement released in 2009 by the Patriarchs and heads of Churches in Jerusalem. The Declaration describes a reality still existing. It is defined "the reality on the ground". It is a reality that reflects too many situations of marginalisation in all continents.

1.1 "say:" peace, peace ", while there is no peace" (Jer. 6:14). Everyone talks about peace in the Middle East and the peace process. So far, however, these are just words; reality is made of Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories, the deprivation of our freedom and all that results from this situation:

1.1.1 The separation wall erected on Palestinian territory, much of which was confiscated for this purpose, has transformed our cities and villages into prisons, separating from each other, making them dispersed and divided cantons. Gaza, especially after the cruel war Israel launched against it in the months of December 2008 and January 2009, continues to live in inhumane conditions, under permanent blockade and cut off from other Palestinian territories.

1.1.2 Israeli settlements ravage our land in the name of God and in the name of force, controlling our natural resources, including water and agricultural land, therefore so hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, constituting an obstacle to a political solution. (Continuing)

The word that is donated to us

The manifestation of Jerusalem follows the one in Cana. Jesus finds too many things in the temple, all things that clutter and occupy rent-free space. There is no need to purify or, better yet, to exorcise i.e. "throw out". Jesus cleanses by releasing and moving. We can't build the new leaving the old one. The heart of the rally in Jerusalem found in the words that relate to my Father, my Father's House. ”. To those who hear this statement goes unnoticed and in fact they do not wonder about his paternity but on his authority. However, the most beautiful reality that makes us fall in love is that Jesus does not limit to call God as Father but God lives in the body of Jesus.

We think about

John does not say that Jesus was accompanied by disciples. Jesus seems a lonely figure that approaches the heart of religion and political power of the Jews. I like to think him so. As I think he will be faced with the same powers before his sentencing.

Jesus accomplishes an act of civil disobedience. But a civil disobedience that has great depth because based on the Father. The Father is the heart of the Gospel of John that presents Jesus always pointing to the Father who sends him. In 21 chapters of this Gospel we find references to the Father 56 times: 4 in the prologue, 34 in the central part; 16 in farewell address and 2 after the Resurrection. In the same Gospel, Jesus, the Son, receives a series of about 25 titles. The Holy Spirit appears 9 times. In 19 tracks are defined the characteristics of the Church. While faith and love, as a response to the love of the Father and of the Son, are mentioned in 20 tracks. Of life and eternal life it speaks 14 times. Does all this tell us nothing? Other than a book of behaviours, the Gospel is a book of life! Let us read it, let us accept it and so let us announce it.

Daniel Comboni: 1000 lives for mission

There are two very deep claims of St. Daniel Comboni. The first almost at the beginning of his second missionary commitment dates back to the very last days of his life. The two statements can be found in paragraphs 1390 and 7245 writings). “What is also certain is that God has given me boundless trust in him, that I will not desert the enterprise for any obstacle at all, and that it is certain that in just a few years a new era of salvation for Central Africa will begin”. (1390).

“Let everything that God wishes come about. God never abandons the one who trusts in him. He is the protector of innocence and vindicator of righteousness. I am happy in the cross, which, when borne willingly out of love for God, gives birth to victory and eternal life”. (7245)
