SAN DIEGO: Il vescovo Robert Brom ha scritto una nota questa settimana chiedendo ai preti cattolici di San Diego di contribuire mediante il versamento di un mese di stipendio per aiutare a pagare i 198,1 milioni di dollari di risarcimenti per abusi.
"Non possiamo chiedere agli altri ciò che noi per primi non siamo disposti a fare", ha scritto Brom nell nota ai circa 280 preti il cui salario medio corrisponde a circa $1,535, come ha riportato il San Diego Union-Tribune di sabato scorso.
I fedeli della zona riceveranno una lettera che chiede loro di elargire "generose donazioni", secondo la nota di Brom. Le spedizioni partiranno entro il 26 ottobre e conterranno la lettera firmata da Brom e dai preti, insieme ad una busta vuota per eventuali offerte.
La richiesta di donazioni fa parte di una nuova campagna chiamata "Abbracciare la Nostra Missione" e servirà ad aiutare "a coprire generosamente le spese dei risarcimenti ai nostri fratelli e sorelle vittime di abusi all’interno della famiglia ecclesiastica", dice il memo.
L’idea è stata dei preti che hanno visto in questo un gesto doveroso verso i 144 uomini e donne che hanno subito abusi quando erano minorenni.
"E’ una forma di riparazione dell’ingiustizia che hanno subito per cominciare il processo di guarigione", ha detto il Rev. Ned Brockhaus, parroco di S. John of the Cross a Lemon Grove. "Molti di noi hanno ritenuto che fosse un buon gesto".
Alcuni parrocchiani, comunque, non sono stati così entusiasti.
Judy Bethel, abitante di San Diego e cattolica praticante, non era d’accordo sulla contribuzione. Se il vescovo Brom non fosse ricorso al procedimento di bancarotta per la diocesi, l’accordo sarebbe stato meno salato, ci ha detto.
"Credo che stia chiedendo a noi di mettere una pezza ai suoi errori", ha detto la Bethel. "Io per prima non sono disposta a farlo".
L’esborso medio per vittima sarebbe di 1,38 milioni di dollari, stando ai termini dell’accordo nnuncito il 7 settembre. Questa somma rispecchia più o meno gli accordi raggiunti nell’arcidiocesi di Los Angeles in luglio.

SAN DIEGO: Bishop Robert Brom issued a memo this week asking priests in the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego to contribute one month’s salary to help pay for the recent $198.1 million sexual abuse settlement.
"We cannot ask of others what we are unwilling to do ourselves," Brom wrote in the memo to about 280 priests, whose monthly salary can be as much as $1,535, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Saturday.
Catholics in the area will also receive letters asking them to make "a generous contribution," according to Brom’s memo. Packets will be sent no later than Oct. 26 and will include letters from Brom and parish pastors, along with a return envelope.
The donation request is part of a new campaign called "Embracing Our Mission" and will be used to help "cover the expense involved in compassionate outreach to our brothers and sisters who suffered sexual abuse within the family of the church," the memo said.
The idea came from current priests who saw it as a gesture toward the 144 men and women who allege they were abused by clergy and church workers when they were minors.
"It’s a way of kind of righting some of the injustices done to them and also start the healing process," said the Rev. Ned Brockhaus, pastor of St. John of the Cross in Lemon Grove. "A lot of us thought it would be a good gesture."
Some parishioners, however, were less than enthusiastic.
Judy Bethel, a Catholic and a San Diego resident, was reluctant to contribute. If Brom hadn’t sought bankruptcy protection for the diocese in February, he could have settled the suits for less money, she said.
"I think he’s asking us to bear the cost of his mistakes," Bethel said. "I for one am not willing to do this."
The average payout will be $1.38 million (â?¬980,000) per victim according to the terms of the agreement announced Sept. 7. That average mirrors the settlement reached in the Los Angeles archdiocese in July.
