L’organizzazione riformatrice della chiesa, Voice of the Faithful, si è riunita qui il 19 e 20 ottobre, in difesa della frustrazione delle vittime perché la gerarchia non ha reso loro giustizia per gli abusi sessuali del clero.

Nel centro congressi, Mary Pat Fox, Presidente di Voice of the Faithful, ha sollecitato i 500 membri partecipanti a trasformare la loro rabbia in amore. Il moderatore Fr. Richard P. McBrien ha suggerito all’organizzazione di non scontrarsi con la gerarchia "tagliando fuori" i vescovi statunitensi. Fr. Donald Cozzens ha ribadito che la richiesta di Voice of the Faithful di rivedere il celibato obbligatorio è in "perfetta armonia" con la teologia del Concilio Vaticano II.

BishopAccountability.org, associazione che conserva in rete in un archivio i documenti legati allo scandalo degli abusi, ha tenuto una nuova conferenza a Providence il 19 ottobre per annunciare la pubblicazione dei documenti che attestano che tra il 1971 e il 2007, 125 preti di Rhode Island sono stati accusati di molestie sessuali, inclusi i 95 accusati di molestie e abusi su minori.

I numeri presenti nei documenti processuali, riportati dal vescovo Thomas J. Tobin nel gennaio 2007, è molto più alto dei 56 preti nominati dal suo predecessore, il vescovo Robert E. Mulvee, accusato anch’egli nel 2004 di aver abusato di un minore tra il 1950 e il 2002.

BishopAccountability.org ha richiesto la costituzione di un grand jury nominato dal procuratore distrettuale. "Questa diocesi è tra le peggiori del paese e continua a tnascondere i crimini", ha detto Anne Barrett Doyle, co-direttrice dell’archivio. "I bambini di Rhode Island sono ancora a rischio".

Circa una dozzina di persone protestavano in strada mentre si teneva la conferenza di Voice of the Faithful. Michael Sweatt, abusato in un istituto gesuita quando era bambino, ha detto che l’organizzazione "ha smarrito la strada".

Sweatt, co-fondatore di una affiliata nel Maine da cui si è dimesso, ha detto che l’organizzazione oggi "lavora sodo per scavalcare il muro e sedere al tavolo dei vescovi criminali, insistendo sulla costituzione di consigli parrocchiali e comitati finanziari. Così facendo verranno fuori ulteriori abusi. Cosa stanno tentando di salvare? Vale la pena salvare la chiesa così come è oggi?", ha aggiunto Weatt, "Tornate in voi, dimenticate di cambiare la chiesa e cambiate invece Voice of the Faithful!".

Reformers meet; report of abuse in R.I. released

The church reform organization Voice of the Faithful gathered for its national convention here Oct. 19 and 20, even as victim advocates voiced frustration with the group and the hierarchy for not doing enough to bring justice to survivors of clergy sexual abuse.

Inside the convention center, Mary Pat Fox, Voice of the Faithful’s president, urged the 500 members in attendance to move from anger to love. Keynoter Fr. Richard P. McBrien advised the organization not be confrontational with the hierarchy nor "to write off" the U.S. Catholic bishops. Fr. Donald Cozzens said Voice of the Faithful’s call for an ecclesial review of mandatory celibacy is in "perfect harmony" with the Second Vatican Council’s theology.

BishopAccountability.org , an online archive of documents related to the abuse scandal, held a news conference in Providence Oct. 19 to announce the release of a document indicating that between 1971 and 2007, 125 priests in Rhode Island were accused of sexual assault or misconduct, including 95 accused of child molestation and sexual assault.

The number in the court document, filed by Bishop Thomas J. Tobin in January 2007, is higher than the 56 priests that Tobin’s predecessor, Bishop Robert E. Mulvee, reported in 2004 as having been accused of sexual abuse of a minor between 1950 and 2002.

BishopAccountability.org called for a grand jury investigation by the state’s attorney general. "This diocese is among the worst in the country and continues to hide secrets of crimes," said Anne Barrett Doyle, codirector of the archive. "Rhode Island children are still at risk."

About a dozen protesters were outside the Voice of the Faithful convention. Michael Sweatt, who alleges abuse as a child at a Jesuit-run school, said the organization "has lost its way."

Sweatt, who cofounded an affiliate in Maine and has since resigned, said the organization "works hard to get over the wall and sit across the table from criminal bishops, insisting on the formation of parish councils and finance councils. In so doing they will have further abused the victims. What is it they’re trying to save? Is the church as it is today worth saving?" Sweatt added, "Get back inside. Forget about changing the church and instead change [Voice of the Faithful]."
